Ninjas in Pyjamas and the Future of Overwatch
European esports giant Ninjas in Pyjamas is releasing their Overwatch team into free agency.
The European team will continue to participate in Overwatch Contenders under the name Rest in Pyjamas — a very clever pun considering the future of the team. Ninjas in Pyjamas entered into Overwatch in August of last year, with a strong team roster and found early success. A lack of overall play in the European market, stunted the growth of the team overall.
“As time passed, we have seen a growing amount of teams release their Overwatch lineups as they assess the future of the games as an esports title,” Ninja in Pyjamas said in a statement. “The scene has not evolved as expected with viewership being below expectations and Blizzard is yet to announce more details about their upcoming Overwatch League.”
Due to high levels of uncertainty, Ninjas in Pyjamas will join the likes of Fnatic, TSM, Denial, Red reserve, Splyce, and Team Digitas in opting out of Overwatch for the perceivable future. The organization, however, chooses to wait and reassess its involvement in Overwatch until more information is released about the Overwatch League.
For now, Ninjas in Pyjamas will focus its efforst on its Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends teams.
