Richard Gingras of Google said, “The mobile web is in crisis.” Bad user experiences, annoying ads (his words) and slow loading. Google News, he says, wants to help all sites with these problems…but, he says, the problems need to be addressed “at the foundation of the web.”

Embracing platforms: As publishers, he says we need to embrace all platforms to build audiences, but at the very least, quick access to content is critical.

Surfacing local content: The very local newspapers are providing something others can’t, and some people are willing to pay for that. Can Google do a better job of surfacing local content? “Absolutely,” Gingras says.

He ended by saying, “The future of news is about opportunity.”
