Kusoma Tu is an outstanding organization that offers voluntary teaching services to rehabilitation schools. For for my internship, I teach the Getathuru risk assessment center, the Remand and the Lower Kabete rehabilitation center.

The Remand is mainly made up of young children of ages between 8 and 13 years old. It was a wonderful experience meeting the highly extroverted children who gave us a warm welcome. We were each assigned to a specific group where we have different teaching duties.

I taught the children word search and some new words. Some of the children were able to do this while others could not since they cannot read. We then played with the children for most of the time. The children have a lot of energy and are very comfortable with interacting with other people.

Getathuru Risk Assessment Center is mainly made up of boys of between ages 9 and 15 years old. They are also a wonderful cohort of boys who are willing and eager to learn. At the centre, we were allocated a group of boys to teach. My group consists of two boys who can read and three who are currently struggling to read. I am very determined to help them learn how to read.

My teaching challenge is engaging with a very shy boy who is hesitant to engage in the learning process. I recently taught them how to read and write letters S, A and T. We also get the chance to take them out for games every Wednesday afternoon.

Lower Kabete Rehabilitation Center consists of boys between the ages of 13 to 19 years old. The boys are very intelligent and proactive. I taught them double sounds such as th, wh and sp. I also assisted some with their mathematics homework.

I have also tried counseling the boys to try and find out what they plan on doing in their future. I was shocked to find out that some of the boys would not want to go back to their homes since they are not comfortable going back to school.

I advised some of them and talked to them about the difficulties and danger of the streets and that they would rather go to school. Some of the students realize that going back to the street was not worth it. This engagement has so far been my greatest achievement during my internship.
