She loves this field,
her horse who grazes
grass, who runs to her
for apple treats.
She loves the wildflowers,
guides me to the colors
tucked away from prying eyes.
She gathers them to put
into a vase.

I’m a city girl, I’ve never
walked through knee-high green.
My shoes are meant for
sidewalks, not for mud and dung
and who-knows-what.
I only know of horses
spinning on a carousel.
I don’t like watching flowers
wilt and die inside the house.

I walk this field because
I want to see her smile.
