I met a childhood friend after almost 2 decades. He seemed a changed person. Well, anybody would in almost 20 years, but there was something very different about him. Instead of a shy, timid type and unsure person, he seemed so full of life, self-assured, and confident. I asked him his secret. He narrated his story. I tried to put his moving story in my words, in the form of a poem:

In the echoes of cool, where calmness resides,
A tale unfolds, of ever-changing tides.
Once a soul of goodness, compassion’s embrace,
People took advantage, a gentle heart’s misplaced grace.

Resolutions declared, a firm vow to uphold,
Sirca 2003 whispered a story, of strength untold.
Deleted numbers, a silent and hushed goodbye,
For those who feigned interest, a heartfelt sigh.

No longer bending, a new perspective dawned,
Peace over disturbance, a decision spawned.
Disconnected from trouble, though some friendships fade,
In the quiet, a newfound self-tranquility is made.

Kindness, generosity, and empathy embraced,
Yet, when goodness is exploited, a boundary traced.
A prized lesson learned, as expectations fall,
Stop, he says to self, hear the self-respect’s call.

People change, memories blur,
In the rush of time, sentiments inter.
But drawing clear lines, a firm Stop decree,
Unveils the treasures, peace and self-respect, fancy-free.

A suggestion echoed, a gem to share,
Be kind, but discern, a truth so rare.
In the vast canvas of life, a peaceful refrain,
A change in perspective, serenity to gain.

Life, the profound teacher, lessons unfold,
Chosen now, peace and self-respect to hold.
In the dance of time, a transformed stance,
The coolest discoveries, found in peace’s embrace.
