A California Birdbath

In my neighbor’s backyard

I envy the birds
in my neighbor’s birdbath
I see the blue jays
and the finches
in their private spa

A fountain of splashes,
wings flapping,
hummingbirds sipping,
doves cooing,
a family of quails in harmony

with little worry of predators
crashing their party,
under a sheltering palm,
sun-dried feathers,
robins in adagio

I’m in a birdwatching trance,
imagining faraway skies
California dreaming,
alongside a concrete Aphrodite,
surrounded by sunflowers
and Painted Ladies.
