Embracing Change: Parting with My Seasonal Garden

The end of a season

Plastic crates and storage bins are stacked along the side of a building with green and red siding. The area is surrounded by grass and appears to be part of a garden or outdoor storage space.

Fall is well underway and has been warmer and dryer than usual, but my garden has been slowly fading away. It has finally started to rain in earnest today and we will be getting more rain over the next few weeks. Soon the snow will fall.

Yesterday I finished putting away my vegetable garden to get ready for winter. We had a few nights of below-freezing temperatures, though they didn’t bother my tomato plants.

A small backyard garden is composed of various makeshift planters filled with tomato plants near a storage shed. Some of the plants are supported by metal cages, and there is a green lawn in the background.

I did strip off all the green tomatoes and bring them in to ripen in the house. I also put a sheet over my green pepper plants to give them a few more days in their bin.

A large quantity of green tomatoes is arranged neatly on a surface, varying in size from larger heirloom varieties to small cherry tomatoes. The tomatoes are still on their vines, laid out in a container or drawer-like space.

I need to change the soil in my containers next spring for new compost, so I decided to empty them now into my new garden beds. I chopped up all the tomato plants and tossed them into compost in place.
