The Nitty Gritty

Your lovely dahlia is a tender perennial. Which means that you will need to protect it from frost.

Plant the knobbly tuber in good quality compost in springtime. Keep undercover and moist until the frost risk has passed.

This stunning dahlia can grow up to 1.2m, so it might need staking with a bamboo cane or similar.

For the maximum quantity of dazzling flowers, start feeding your dahlia with tomato feed when the flowers appear. Feed every two weeks until September.

If you grow your dahlia in a container, you may need to lift out the tuber and store in a cool dry place over the winter. Or, if yours are in the ground, you could cover them with a thick mulch to protect them from frosts.

If you live in a milder area, you may be able to leave them as they are.

Nitty Gritty Score: 7/10
