Always more to learn

There’s always more to learn. This is cliché, of course, however, I was reminded of this in a recent lesson with one of my guitar students.

He showed me this interesting instrumental version of “Isn’t She Lovely” he wanted to learn. The rhythm part was this very cool percussive fingerpicking pattern that incorporates a percussive “snare” sound on 2 and 4. I’ve heard John Mayer use this technique often as well.

We worked on it for the hour and I was so taken with the technique that I continued working on it for myself when he left. I thought it’s such a practical and great sounding accompaniment part and seemed strange that I hadn’t thought to work on it before.

I just think it’s cool how new learnings can come so unexpectedly and from any person regardless of age or ability.
