You Have Gay Marriage Get Over Social Justice

Here we are again talking about saying we will give people what they want, but if they ever want anything else they need to shut up and get over it.

Recently there was a tragic shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. A domestic terrorist opened fire on the guests and some even held hostage. This sparked up a lot of debate including arguments about religion, gun control, and of course, sexual orientation.

Unfortunately, many people died in this tragic event making this one of the worst shootings in American history, but what was very disturbing was that many people trivialized the attack by basing it off of the sexual orientation of the victims. Some even praising the fact that it was, and I quote, “perverts instead of innocent people.”

Surprisingly it wasnt shocking to me. I just didnt think that people would stoop that low to blame someones sexual orientation for their death and be that ok with it.

But we don’t need gay pride right?

Gay marriage was supposed to be the way to get all the homosexuals to shut up and be happy that for once they could get the same rights as heterosexuals. But what people don’t realize is the social injustice that homosexuals have to face today is still an issue. Its just like saying “ we gave you blacks freedom from slavery, but that’s not gonna stop us from being racist and socially criticizing your every move.”

Just because you gave us marriage equality, does not erase the fact that too often our public discourse on sexuality dehumanizes those who are not Straight. It suppresses and disgraces, often even terrifies Queer-identified people from openly proclaiming who they are. Constantly people who are Queer have to hide their love for their significant others because of posts like this. Not to mention the violence and humilition people of queer face on a daily basis. At its essence, Pride is a humanizing celebration. Pride is a day where people don’t have to hide who they really are.

Until society decides to accept that being different is ok. we will still need a month where queer folk demand that they are treated with the same dignity and respect as straight people. It’s not much to ask, but then again this is America, The Land of The “Free.
