Love Trumps Holiness

Jesus emphasizes love and justice for the marginalized

Love trumps holiness.

Jesus did not declare that the greatest command of all is to be holy. Nor did Jesus say, “A new command I leave with you: obey the Bible’s commands.”

Jesus did say, “Woe to you Pharisees [those who think they are holier than others]; you neglect justice and the love of God.”

Jesus did say, “Woe to you Bible experts because you load people with burdens — and you will not lift one finger to help them.”

Finally, Jesus states, “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” When you hear that declaration, do you feel guilty because you have not obeyed all sexual holiness laws? Instead, do you feel motivated to love and provide justice to all LGBTQ+ people (and every kind of marginalized person)?

Love trumps holiness.
