I am definitely a supporter of people having their pronouns in their bios. On every platform I actively use, I put my pronouns in my bio. This is a small thing that people can do to make trans people more comfortable, and I’m going to share some reasons why.

It’s beneficial to many people.

Before we get to why it helps trans people, it helps lots of others too. If you find yourself getting misgendered frequently, try putting your pronouns in your bio. It allows people to know how you want to be addressed, without needing to meet you or talk to you. If you have ever found yourself looking at someone’s profile and wondering whether to refer to them as he, she or they, people may wonder that when looking at yours.

Trans people are targeted.

If trans people are the only ones with pronouns in their bios, they are more likely to be targeted by hateful people and hate groups. If cisgender people (people whose gender is the same as the sex they were born as) put their pronouns in their bios too, it will be harder for people to target trans people.

Helping to keep people who are frequently targeted safe is imperative. As a cis person, you can start by doing something as simple as this to help keep trans people safe.

It’s easy.

Seriously. You only have to hit ‘edit profile’ and type in your pronouns. Then, you’re done. You have done something super small that is a good step in the direction of change.

So, if you haven’t yet, put your pronouns in your bio. It will take you a few seconds, and it could help many people.

Here are a few other places to put your pronouns:

  • Add them to your email signature
  • Put them on your business cards
  • Write them on your name tag at work or events
  • Start saying them when you introduce yourself
