Recently, the rise of social media has greatly contributed to body inclusivity in the fashion industry. The Plus size woman has a voice to express herself, feel beautiful, confident and loved unlike in the past when it was almost a crime to be big, bold, curvy and beautiful. There has being a rise in social media influencers who are plus size and they are not afraid to flaunt their curves, stretch marks, cellulite and, all their beautiful imperfection.

There is a high demand for stylish, colorful and playful plus size dresses. The plus-size queens are not taking no for an answer. Instagram influencers like Nabela Noor have gone ahead to launch a plus size fashion label “ZEBA”. Her Fashion label carries sizes up to 4x.

Ashley Graham is a plus-size model who is continuously encouraging women to love and appreciate their bodies. It is amazing how she makes it easy for everyone to relate to her. She posts raw and untouched pictures of herself on social media so that women all over the world will know that she is not perfect.

Ashley Graham: Untouched

“This photo inspires and encourages me. After having my baby, I became so insecure about my body and would constantly get teased about my stretch marks, cellulite and “mummy tummy”. Ashley Graham reminds me of the perfect imperfection. I always remind myself that I earned those marks, the cellulite and mummy tummy whenever I look at my baby girl”.

In the past, there was little or no stylish plus size clothing. Recently, plus size women are becoming more confident and rocking more daring outfits. There are lingerie lines for plus size women. Who would not feel beautiful wearing sexy lingerie?

The fashion industry is trying to incorporate plus sizes into their fashion line. I believe that the plus-size industry is an untapped gold mine. These women are willing to pay anything to get designer clothing that fits and looks beautiful on them. Some designers argue that plus-size clothes cost more to make in terms of fabric consumption and time required to make an outfit. In 2018, the British Fashion retailer “New Look” was accused of charging more for plus size clothes than regular sized clothes, hence the term “Fat Tax”.

Lesley Hampton, a graduate of Fashion Techniques and Design from George Brown College promotes body diversity and inclusivity through her clothing line “Lesley Hampton”

Every woman is beautiful. Every woman is unique in her own way. Every woman is special. No woman should feel otherwise.

In the future, the Plus size woman will be fully recognized and incorporated into the fashion industry. Designers are starting to realize that these bold, curvy and beautiful women have a huge role to play in the fashion industry.
