Due in two weeks: 03/03

Light is the essence of photography; without it no photograph can be created. But light as a tangible visible object in photography plays a variety of roles. Sometimes light is used to give us clues about the subject by determining time of day, other times it interacts with the subject by illuminating it or creating mode in a shot, and it can also behave as subject and be the focal point appearing as lines or shapes.

In this project you will emphasis the use of light and explore how it behaves in a shot in three different ways. You will produce 15 final shots in total where each five will be a connected series that represents light.

  1. Your first 5 will explore how light determines time of day. In this you will select one location or subject and take similar shots of it through 5 different times of the day. The difference should be clear where we can identify the passage of time when looking at the series as a whole.
  2. Your second 5 are about how light illuminates a subject/object. Take shots where light allows us to know what is the focal point and creates a specific mode. An example could be playing with natural light coming from a window and how it can illuminate the space or people indoors.
  3. In your last 5 you will focus on how light is the subject specially when it performs as shapes and lines. Keep in mind that to identify light as a subject we need to utilize shadow and darkness.

As expected, start early and do take many many shots. Come to our next class with a huge number of photographs to select from. Make sure they are uploaded to Lightroom which will be very handy for the selection process. You can use basic Lightroom development features but don’t heavily rely on it. Make sure your original shots are very close to how you expect them to be.
