Hello… If you are reading this then you are a student of Gdes 2361. I am Eman Alshawaf, your instructor. This class is designed to expose you to contemporary forms of photographic image making. While we might use the word photography during the class, we will also be using another equally powerful, yet less widespread word: iPhoneography.

Popular contemporary photography is being mostly practiced in the form of iPhoenography. In this class, you will learn the power of snapping, editing and sharing images all thorugh one smaprtphone device. You might be already practicing iPhoenography and using your phone to make images, but if you have never edited an image through your smartphone, don’t worry! There is room for everyone to learn.

So yes, you will need a smartphone or a tablet to participate in this class. Other cameras, like professional DSLRs, are not a requirement but could be used for the last two projects. You will learn how to develop a concept, story, style, and composition, while controlling color, contrast, and format.

Do spend the next few days before class familiarizing yourself with your smartphone. Learn how to control the basic camera features: turn on and off the flash, focus the image, and change the brightness.

Also if you’d to purchase a tripod and a smartphone mount, this is all up to you. Completely optional! Just make sure if you, you pick a tripod that suits not only your smartphone but also any camera you might purchase or borrow in the future. Regardless of the the following articles say, $20 tripods do the job if you select one that handles the weight of your camera

This space here, on Medium, is where you will share reflections on readings, inspirations, and post projects. Projects and tasks will be shared in class or on this publication depending on our flow. You should also familiarize yourself with Medium and do the following:

  • Create an account using your UMN email.
  • Set up a profile and use an actual image of you so we can recognize you!
  • Test writing stories, attaching images, and sharing links.
  • Follow this publication!

Two things to consider when posting stories: post them as a response to my original post (if there is one for a field trip or an assignment) and add the tag gdes 2361. The platform is easy to navigate, but for more help on how to use Medium read this how-to page.

Also, always back up everything you write! Make sure you have a copy on a word processor (e.g Microsoft Word, Pages, Notes…)

I guess that’s it for instructions. One last thing to remember: It is the photographer rather than the camera that generates the end result!

See you in class!

-Eman
