It’s a Wrap! Here’s What Happened at GDG DevFest Nairobi 2018

After months of anticipation, GDG DevFest Nairobi 2018 came and went in a flash. GDG DevFest Nairobi (described by many as ‘Google I/O of Africa’), brings together people who are shaping the future of Android, Web, IoT — Robotics, AI and Cloud technologies for a days of sessions, workshops and networking.

The day was fully packed with technical activities with some of the best industry experts presenting on the most exciting topics. We countdown the top 10 highlights.

  1. A truly pan-African event

#devfestNairobi #devfest18 brought together 1,200 amazing engineers (with 300+ on waiting list) from 30+ countries.

2. Olfa Fdhila shared her AI experience in Mauritius and showed how AI can be used at edge to build Smart Fridge.

She took the developers through the impacts and limitations of AI together with a Snake AI demo.

3. Some famous faces appeared in the crowd

We had Googlers Vivian Akinyi, Aniedi Udo-Obong, Olaiwola Bolaji, John Kimani attending the event. A total of 5 GDEs Google Developer Experts) Kenneth M Kinyanjui, Eugene Mutai, Olivier Leplus, Robert John also graced the event. We had several communities leads from all over the continent attending the event including: Roina Atieno Ochieng, Nsubuga Hassan, Andrew Sithole among others

4. Lots of Learning

This year we had so many experts all around the world, passioned speakers from different countries to share their knowledge and experience with everyone.

More than 70 people applied to a speak at #devfestNasirobi. We had 44 sessions, 4 tracks and 11 codelabs facilitated by 5 GDEs (Google Developer Experts) among other notable speakers.

Lots of sessions were full of deep knowledge and inspiration. DevFest was very saturated. Speakers impressed not only their perfect speeches, but also a good sense of humor.

Sharon Ud Georgewill, the Wonder Woman of Design Sprint ⭐️ had a session on the Design Sprint Formula 1.

5. Aniedi Udo-Obong was a special guest #devfestNairobi #devfest18. He delivered the keynote address and emphasized on the importance of community and the role Google is playing in such events.

We got almost a“full house” on Room D when Web GDE Olivier Leplus was presenting.

Speakers were motivating the audience to create great products.Some of them were coding live. The audience really appreciated it. The great mood of the participants and interesting content contributed to a large number of questions.

10. Moyinoluwa Adeyemi talked about how to build smarter Apps with ML Kit

During the breaks between the speeches, participants actively became acquainted with each other, they made selfies and shared photos.
