5 High-Quality Podcasts For Software Developers
Podcasts are great for learning and planting the seeds for new ideas for software developers. Unlike reading documentation, podcasts are more informal, does not require you to be focused on a screen, and allow you to passively become aware about new trends in the industry.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of high-quality podcasts covering a wide range of topics to get you started.
1. Software at Scale by Utsav Shah
Software at Scale is an excellent podcast for learning about how software is built at top tech companies. Engineers and leaders from heavy-hitter companies such as Stripe, Google, and Dropbox come on to the podcast and talk about the decisions and processes that go into scaling software systems to millions of users.
If you are a junior developer or starting you own business, Software at Scale is both inspiring and educational.
2. The Stack Overflow Podcast
Yes, you’re first destination for any programming help also has a podcast. The Stack Overflow Podcast is quite fun to listen to. Episodes are under 30 minutes and the style is informal. There is usually an overarching topic for each episode, but the hosts don’t mind going off on tangents or cracking jokes.
This podcast is not the most technical, and the topics are usually broad, however, it is definitely entertaining and worth listening to on a short drive/walk.
3. Serverless Chats by Jeremy Daly & Rebecca Marshburn
Serverless Chats, as the name implies, focuses on serverless architecture and building applications using cloud services such as AWS Lambda. If you are interested in learning how to design applications for serverless and the costs and benefits of going serverless, this podcast is right for you.
Despite focusing on serverless, episodes feature a variety of topics including machine learning, security, reliability, etc. and how they fit into the serverless world. Given that serverless is very popular at the moment, it is worth checking Serverless Chats out.

The daily episodes are great since there’s always new content to listen to.
5. Indie Hackers by Courtland Allen
The Indie Hackers podcast is my personal favorite of this list. Courtland brings on business founders to chat about their businesses. Although it focuses on building and growing new businesses, a good chunk of the episodes delve into software development and the technology backing these businesses. There is a wealth of knowledge in the show centering around starting a new business as both a tech and non-tech founder and what technologies and tools founders are using to grow and market their business.
I mentioned Software at Scale earlier and its guests come from large well-established tech companies. On the other side, Indie Hackers provides perspective on companies, tech and non-tech, that are just starting out and what software development practices and tools are use on a smaller scale.
Hopefully, now you have a better idea of what kind of podcast content is out there for software developers and you found something you might enjoy.
