Whether you know it as lab-grown, cultured, or cultivated meat, you may have heard of this futuristic food developed in labs. By harmlessly extracting cells from live animals, scientists have been able to grow real meat in labs, not far from how plants are grown from seeds.

Since the first proof-of-concept of cultured meat was revealed in 2013, the industry has seen the rise of plenty of startups, each racing to become a future leader. Eat Just sold the world’s first commercial cell-cultured meat in late 2020, while Future Meat was the first company to begin mass-producing cultured meat — just a few months ago.

Lab-grown meat might seem like a foreign, perhaps even scary concept, but it’s an incredible invention with many advantages over conventional meat.

Here are five of the things that I love most about cultured meat.

No animal suffering

Fifty billion chickens, one and a half billion pigs, and half a billion sheep. Those are the estimated numbers of animals raised and slaughtered for human consumption annually. And those numbers keep increasing. Our population may have doubled over the last fifty years, but the amount of meat we eat has tripled.
