Italy has just made history by becoming the first Western country to ban ChatGPT.

The reason?

Privacy concerns.

The Italian data protection authority is worried that AI technology like ChatGPT could spread misinformation and bias, as well as other potential harms to minors. They also claimed the necessity to investigate whether ChatGPT complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

⚠️ GDPR is the legislation that governs the way in which we can use, process, and store personal data.

The trigger for the decision was a data breach involving user conversations and payment information that the ChatGPT web interface experienced on the last 20th of March.

A bug in one of the libraries used by ChatGPT allowed some users to see titles from another active user’s chat history.
