If you’ve ever considered or are currently using Google home and are looking for interesting ways to expand your ‘smart home’ with a DIY project, this article is for you! I personally was bored in my cardiology/respirology section of med school so needed something to do while I wasn’t studying ^_^

First things first — supplies! When acquiring these supplies, consider the size of the magic mirror you want to build, as this will dictate what size mirror you should purchase. Depending on what spare parts you may already have on hand, you may want to buy items that pair with those already existing.

  • Raspberry Pi (I used 3b+) — was gifted to me for giving a talk at a rapid prototyping symposia
  • voice hat (AIY by Google) — the earlier version is built around and comes with a raspberry pi zero
  • computer monitor w/ power cord — I “borrowed” an old one from my lab
  • two-way mirror
  • small USB powered fan
  • wooden baseboard/trim (this will be your frame)
  • 1x4 wooden boards (shadow box)
  • assorted screws
  • hacksaw
  • miter cutting guide
  • wood glue
  • nails
  • power drill
