ChatGPT & You: Language Generation’s Uncanny Valley
Taking a look how our most Advanced AI Language Model to-date can shape our perception of NLG technology
As of writing this, it’s hard to go surfing anywhere online and not see articles about ChatGPT. 🏄
What has interested me the most in this current news cycle about ChatGPT is:
ChatGPT, and the discussion around the model’s capacity to have an “intelligent” conversation, leads to some interesting questions about our ability to evaluate non-human intelligence, and what that could even look like.
Through this article (and perhaps a few more) I’d like to argue:
- ChatGPT represents our first step into the uncomfortable world of “Language Generation’s Uncanny Valley,” and the cautions that come with that achievement
- ChatGPT is an amazing artificial intelligence cannot be considered “as intelligent as a human” because “intelligence” is a poorly-defined, slippery word
- ChatGPT is an amazing artificial intelligence that lacks several key conceptual component required for widespread, robust AIs
Disclaimer/Spoiler: I do not think ChatGPT is conscious, the beginning of the AI singularity, or hyper-intelligent in any sense…
