I do and I need it to prevent burnout.

❝Just curious, do you do anything besides coding?❞

Upon hearing my colleague’s question, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes 😒 I’m currently in my 3ʳᵈ job and at each workplace, at least 2 other co-workers from non-technical divisions would without a doubt ask the exact same question. In short, the answer is yes and in fact, I can testify that it helps me significantly in avoiding the infamous ❛Developer Burnout Syndrome❜.

During my University days, my faculty was publicly named as the ❝School of Information Systems❞, with the acronym SIS. Students from other faculties such as ❝School of Business❞ & ❝School of Economics❞ had often joked that it should be renamed to the ❝School of Insufficient Sleep❞ (SIS) instead due to the frequency which its students had to stay overnight in school to meet project deadlines. As a result this inevitably led to the impression that students who graduated from technical faculties do nothing but code, debug, sleep and eat. Personally and truth to be told, I do enjoy programming even in my free time. However, like many other homo-sapiens do; I need to have a few activities in my life to feel fulfilled and 1 of them just so happens to be Arts & Craft — specifically Wire Crafting.

Indulging in a hobby which contrasts with my school curriculum/day job not only enables my brain to rest, recharge and rejuvenate but also gives me a chance to reconnect with my friends.

So some may wonder how does reconnecting with friends even remotely relate to my hobbies? 🤔 Well over the years (since I started playing with Wire Crafting at the age of 11), many wire works I have created have noticeably cumulated in my room. It is easy to dispose of the ❝failed creations❞ but the idea of throwing away some of my older pieces due to the lack of space did not sit well with me.
