So, Where do I begin? Elon Musk and Tesla are designing a HVAC project to DISRUPT the $300 Billion standard Home heating and AC industry.

Tesla as a company is known for breaking stereotypes. Firstly, they introduced electric cars, breaking the fuelling stereotype of gas engine cars. Then they started working upon energizing homes with 100 percent green solar energy and now they are working on HVAC systems.

HVAC stands for ‘Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.’ Just to make things clear, most homes already have a system for the purpose of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. But there is a new revolutionary Tesla HVAC system in the works. The vision behind the Tesla HVAC system is to use as little energy as possible while being more effective than what is currently available in the market. Two years ago, for the first time, Elon Musk showed interest in domestic HVACs.

Tesla cars are currently known for providing their passengers with serene quality fresh air no matter what the ambient conditions are, thanks to Tesla’s in-house ‘HEPA’ filters which are 10 percent more efficient than normal ones. Just, for instance, Tesla’s filters are 300 times better in filtering bacteria, 500 times better in filtering allergens, 700 times better at filtering soot or smog, and 800 times better in filtering viruses.

Fun fact, Tesla refers to these extreme air cleaning mechanisms as ‘Bioweapon Defence Mode.’ Moreover, these filters also clean the air outside the car, making things better for the people around the vehicle. The heating and cooling system in Tesla vehicles involves a careful symbiosis, for example the new Tesla Model Y has a better solution for improving the battery range and does this with its new HVAC system. This system displaces heat from hotter areas of the car to cooler ones. With this system, the car is now able to keep its batteries at optimum temperature when the outside temperature is extremely low to avoid a drop in the battery’s range and efficiency. In June 2020, Tesla dropped a software update after which the car has now started asking the users for heating batteries, in cold weather, whenever there is a supercharger in the vicinity.

Giving some useful information about the car’s HVAC was important because only then you will be able to get Tesla’s take on domestic HVACs. Elon Musk said that he imagines a full home HVAC system that is inspired by and may be linked with the temperature controls inside someone’s Tesla vehicle. Behind this project, the primary goal is to deploy solar power systems for which more energy-efficient systems are required. The idea is to bring down the figures of total household energy usage so that a solar energy system is all on what a household needs to depend upon.

These systems would make use of similar HEPA filters that are being used in Tesla’s vehicles, so the domestic air quality is also bound to improve. For people with allergies, these systems will be life changing. These systems will also be linked to the cars, so instead of keeping the house cooled for the whole day, you will be able to turn your system on from your car when you are going back home, and that way a lot of energy can be saved. As a company, Tesla refrains from energy produced via fossil fuels, being the pioneer behind revolutionizing electric vehicles, we can expect Tesla’s HVAC system to be highly energy-efficient, simple to operate, minimalistic just like the barely visible front airflow vents of the Tesla Model 3 thus guaranteeing more liveable space and lastly no sacrifices for going green by eliminating the cost of fuel and reducing the cost of electricity by controlling its consumption.

Tesla products make use of better technologies and guarantee higher efficiency, so they generally start off at a higher price tag but as Tesla becomes more efficient in terms of manufacturing these products, the prices drop as the production is scaled up.

Let us talk about what Tesla is eyeing, and why they would want to work on this project. Well, according to the US’s energy administration, an average household in the US spends about 12 percent of their entire home energy expenditures on air conditioning. In specifically warmer states this number moves up to 27 percent. In the US about 60 percent of the households use central air conditioning systems while 23 percent of households use individual AC units and only 5 percent of households use both, so the market of both of these products is huge. Globally, the market for air conditioners is around 78 billion dollars, which is growing at around 10 percent per year.

As a company, release dates are Tesla’s worst nightmare because they seldom manage to release their products bang on the dates they initially announced. Like where is the roadster? It was supposed to come out in 2020. So, let us talk about the progress Tesla has been able to make in this project. At the 2020 Tesla’s battery day event, Elon Musk was asked a question about his intentions for thermal management systems for homes and while giving the answer he mentioned home HVACs as the pet project, and he added that his company has already done a massive amount of work on these systems. From Elon’s quotes, it can be predicted that these products will go into testing by late 2021 and they may very well be on their way to replace your current HVAC systems by 2022. Yet, if you want to know about the exact date on which you will be able to buy a new Tesla HVAC system, we can only shrug our shoulders.

OUTRO:

So, would you dump your traditional home air conditioning system when Tesla starts shipping their multipurpose HVAC systems?
