The METAVERSE? What is it Really?

“Metaverse” has been all over the news since Mark Zuckerberg announced that “Facebook” will change its name to “Meta”. Whether it reminds you of Ariana Grande’s Virtual Concert in Fortnite that attracted 78 million players or Mark Zuckerberg talking about how your Avatar in the Metaverse could mimic your facial expression perfectly in real-time during Facebook’s annual AR/VR conference, it is now clear that the Metaverse is far beyond Mark’s tool to distract public’s eye from the whistleblower crisis.

The term first appeared in Neal Stephenson’s science-fiction novel “Snow Crash” published in 1992. It is quite astonishing how it somehow predicted the emergence of such a virtual reality-based world that becomes the next generation of the internet.

We have been seeking to find more engaging medium to not only entertain ourselves but also to obtain information, and to perform daily tasks. For example, shifting from reading blog posts (like you’re doing right now) to looking at images, to watching online videos and scrolling through Tik-Tok all day long. The Metaverse is the next step of a more immersed version, it is part of the future that we have to embrace — whether we like it or not.
