How To Improve Your Job Search With 4 Quick Tips
Tips on job hunting for tech professionals from someone who has applied to a thousand+ jobs over the past 20 years
Most people I know who say they are looking for a job will apply to a dozen roles, ask friends if they are hiring, then often give up and gasp “I tried but there is nothing out there!” I often laugh when I hear this as I know most people don’t know what trying really is.
I’m no guru and this isn’t to brag but to give context — I’ve had 10 jobs in 25 years and probably 3x more offers. Some include top names like Apple, Google, Netflix, and Amazon, as well as startups, random tech firms, banks like Merrill Lynch, and consultancies like McKinsey. So I have experience and just maybe — I enjoy the job hunting game.
My Ritual For Job Hunting
When I look for a new job, my OCD kicks in and I have this ritual:
- Revise my resume and spend a few weeks getting it near perfect
- Talk thru my resume as if I’m at an interview to feel out any weak areas
- Apply to a dozen jobs a week minimum, and when I hit 100, reflect and make adjustments
