Automakers are investing heavily in AV technology, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). AVs will allow vehicles to travel autonomously. But it will take a long time before we see fully autonomous vehicles on our roadways. The potential benefits of fully autonomous vehicles are tremendous, but there are also many challenges.
While fully autonomous vehicles will remain an enticing prospect, their high cost of development will force the market toward mobility services. Even if fully autonomous cars do become available, most consumers will not be able to afford them. However, they might be able to afford to use autonomous taxi and bus services, which could run around the clock without human drivers. Some companies are already working on developing ‘robotaxis’ and trialling these services in China.
