Are traditional data collection methods going to become obsolete with the introduction of the Metaverse?

I am a fan of the show “Silicon Valley”, where Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) and his team are trying to build a decentralised internet or Web 3.0 for the cool kids.

One of the gaming companies that Richard collaborates with (K-hole) crosses him by mining user data, which goes against the company’s core principle.

Richard tries to end the data collection by inherently mining the CEO’s user data to air his dirty laundry. This spectacularly backfires where people’s conversations are indexed and later turn into a marketing ploy. When a user says in their headset that they are craving food, instantaneously, an advert of Dominos’ pops up in this game itself.

As much as this television series is a work of fiction, after I watched that episode, I muttered to myself that is certainly possible right now.

Targeted advertising has become highly mature with algorithms like Facebook and Instagram.

So, what does the dream of the Metaverse do for your typical data lifecycle of mining, engineering and privacy?
