The internet has come a long way since its inception. It has transformed the way we live our lives, do business, and interact with each other. But, as with all new technologies, its impact was not immediately felt. The initial slow takeoff was followed by a period of explosive growth as the technology became more useful and more people started to use it. We are now at a point where the internet is an essential part of our daily lives.

But what if I told you that we are now at the start of another sigmoid curve, one that will be even more transformative than the last? That’s right; we are now at the start of the mass adoption of AI. The technology is still in its early stages, but it is growing rapidly, and we are seeing new and exciting applications of it every day.

The sigmoid curve is often used to describe the lifecycle of a product, service or technology, and its growth trajectory over time.

  1. Smartphones: The adoption of smartphones followed a sigmoid curve, starting with a slow takeoff as the technology was introduced, and then exploding in popularity as people found the devices to be useful for communication, entertainment, and productivity. The major pain points were sorted out, and loads of competitors entered the market, which led to rapid innovation and improvement in the technology. However, in recent years, the rate of progress has flattened out as the market has become more saturated and innovation has slowed.
  2. Social Media: The rise of social media platforms also followed a sigmoid curve, with a slow takeoff as platforms like MySpace and Friendster were introduced, and then an explosion in popularity with the introduction of Facebook and Twitter. These platforms changed the way we communicate and consume information, and spawned a whole new industry of influencer marketing and social media advertising. However, in recent years, concerns about privacy, fake news, and the impact of social media on mental health have led to a plateau in growth and a reevaluation of the role of social media in our lives.
  3. E-commerce: The growth of e-commerce has followed a sigmoid curve, with a slow takeoff as companies like Amazon and eBay were founded, and then an explosion in popularity as people began to shop online for everything from books to groceries. This led to the development of new technologies like online payment systems and shipping logistics, and completely disrupted traditional retail. However, in recent years, the growth of e-commerce has started to plateau as the market has become saturated and competition has increased.

The potential uses of AI are vast and varied. It can be used to automate tedious tasks, make predictions based on large data sets, and even create art. But with this rapid growth comes a new set of challenges. What happens to the people whose jobs are replaced by AI? How do we ensure that AI is used ethically? How do we make sure that AI does not become too powerful and take over the world?

These are all valid concerns, and they must be addressed. But we cannot ignore the fact that AI has the potential to revolutionize our lives in ways that we can’t even imagine. It can help us solve some of the world’s most significant problems, from climate change to disease to poverty.

We’re in an “AI Tidal Wave” moment now. In all the hype and hyperbole following the debut of ChatGPT, no one really knows the impact on work, business, creativity, and our lives. But we’re all now trying to connect the dots on what could be done and dreaming of what could be. —Tom Fishburne

The question is, are we ready for this new sigmoid curve? Are we prepared for the changes that are coming? The truth is, no one knows for sure. But we can start by educating ourselves about AI and its potential uses. We can also work to ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly. And we can be open to the idea that our world is about to change, possibly beyond recognition.

It is essential to remember that, as with any new technology, there will be winners and losers. Some people will benefit from the changes brought about by AI, while others will lose their jobs and struggle to adapt. But we cannot let fear of the unknown hold us back. We must embrace the changes that are coming and work to make the most of them.

The mass adoption of AI is the start of a new sigmoid curve, one that will be even more transformative than the last. We cannot predict what the future holds, but we must be prepared for the changes that are coming. We must work to ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly and be open to the idea that our world is about to change, possibly beyond recognition. The future is uncertain, but if we work together, we can make the most of it.
