After attending Princeton University for a couple of years, in 1939, Alan Turing returned to England just before the Second World War and went to work for the British Cryptanalytic Headquarters at Bletchley Park, in Milton Keynes.

At this Allied code-breaking centre, Alan Turing and his team managed to crack The Enigma. This consists of various German codes through which they communicated on the battlefields, skies and oceans.

Turing’s pivotal role in helping the Allies during World War II coincided with the period when he used his ability to see patterns and equations to shape what would later be called Artificial Intelligence.

He accomplished this by creating various computing devices that could learn from experience, with the help of which they were able to decrypt 84.000 German communications every month.

Two years after Turing’s death, in 1956, John McCarthy, an American computer scientist, coined the term Artificial Intelligence by mentioning it for the first time in a conference in Dartmouth, New Hampshire.
