Identifying your target audience is the most important step in search engine optimization, before implementing the priorities mentioned in the first part of this series, it’s best to know the type of visitors you want to attract to your product. That way tailoring your content to maximum appeal would be much easier.

Most companies, organizations, and people make the mistake of thinking the target audience identification is only important when creating the product, without realizing it’s just as important after product creation and for SEO success.

So, How do I Identify My Target Audience? You say.

Obviously, you roughly have an idea of who your target audience is, especially if you already generate revenue online, or have a presence online either by having a blog or social media account(s). These are the people already interacting with your product directly or indirectly.

But if you want to confirm the actual demographic of your target audience follow these few steps: Define their age group, their gender(are they mostly female, male, or mixed), and their interests. This way you have drafted the customer persona and identified your audience.

Now, What would they search for and How would they search for it?

Having figured out the right target audience for your product now, it’s time to tailor your content to maximum appeal, which brings us to keyword(s) research. Customers search online in two major ways: Search to find products and Search to find information.

Taking a fashion e-commerce platform as a case study.

Examples of products search keyword(s) would include;

  • High-neck t-shirts for men
  • Tailored blazers including free delivery
  • High-street gym wear

Examples of information search keyword(s) would include;

  • How to dress for a date night
  • The right outfit for an interview
  • How to style a pair of sneakers with a suit?

For proper optimization having both types of keyword(s) sets embedded in one’s content, this way it’s assured that however the target audiences make their searches on the web one’s product would always surface in the top 10% of the search results.

Now, How do I Perform Better Keyword Research? You say.

A trick I make use of is, on my browser when I type anything into the search bar the suggestions that come up. These are the best keywords and phrases related to my content that real-time personas already searched for.

But then there are several autocomplete tools that would generate much better keywords for instance PEMAVOR, Ubersuggest, Answer the public, and Google auto-complete & Keyword Planner tool. To mention a few. Using this method and tools you can find real-time relevant search terms that you can use for your content.

Conclusion

Customers and keyword(s) research would help you learn and understand what your target audience searches for. You would find out the precise phrases they use when they search.
