Becoming a Technical Writer can seem like a great idea considering the amount of work there is and how you can make a decent amount of money from different streams.

However, the path to get there is not always clear, especially so if you’re not a former IT employee turned writer.

In this roadmap I’m going to attempt to give you a high-level overview of what it means to be a Technical Writer, how can you become one, and most importantly how you can find ways to earn money from it.

Let’s get started.

What is a Technical Writer?

A Technical Writer writes about multiple technical topics.

The definition is a bit broad, I know, but as a TW you can do many things:

  • Write blog posts about different technologies.
  • Write detailed documentation about a specific software product.
  • Create visual material to explain technical concepts.
  • Write technical books about different technologies and software products.
  • Research and write white papers about technology.
