It’s a new year, and with that comes another Github Octoverse report which uses data that Github has to unearth some pretty interesting truths.

One of these are the top languages used in 2022 on the site.

This gives us a good idea of what is trending, what is getting less popular, and what is just plain popular and most used in general.

From this, it may be good for those starting out to focus on the higher-ranked ones and to perhaps avoid those that are trending down.

It’s a bit of a simplified view at things; there are a ton of nuances as to what languages you can pick up, and it’ll vary from things like on-the-job practicality to what aspects of the language you find most interesting.

An interesting trend that has popped up in the list of the most used languages is that there has been a clear number one for eight straight years.

That winner is Javascript.

Javascript has topped the likes of Python, Java, and Typescript for the overall #1 position, and it really is showing little to no signs of changing in 2023.

Python, for what it’s worth, has been a strong #2 ever since 2019.
