There are many pieces of software that look and feel similar to each other, like thousands of to-do list apps, Candy Crush copies and music players. They rarely have any personality or strong philosophy behind them. And that is nothing bad. We are often looking just for a cheaper or perhaps nicer looking, maybe a more polished alternative to what we are already using.

Then there are pieces of software like Roam research that have elaborated and almost menacing white papers behind them. Be prepared for a long read!

However, I dare to say that there are few design decisions in the core of Roam that would be controversial. People tend to complain mainly about Roam’s lack of polish, its price, missing mobile app, online nature without proper local storage of files — and, of course, the personality of its founder. On the contrary, many of the design decisions made by Roam Research are widely appreciated and even copied by others — just look at Athens or LogSeq.

Today, I would like to speak about two mind mapping tools that I find distinctive, unique and — for the lack of a better word — opinionated. I think they are not for everyone. Actually, they are not even for me at this moment! But they are definitely worth trying out and maybe they will suit you more than anything else. Or…
