Unreal Engine. Change Third-Person Character to a First-Person

Let’s take a look at how we can easily change our third-person character to a first person with a simple camera position change

… or you could just create a simple 3d-person Unreal project, and start from a scratch.

What we will be implementing (gif):

Let’s begin…

Double-click on your character Blueprint file, CustomCharacter in our case (inherited from the ThirdPersonCharacter):

Change Use Controller Rotation Yaw value to “true”:

Next, we will need to set Use Controller Desired Rotation to “true”:

⚠️ NOTE: If you inherited your character’s Blueprint class from another, you will need to create a duplicate and not use inheritance, otherwise you will get an error when will try to change a CameraBoom props:

Create a Duplicate:

Next, we will need to make changes to the CameraBoom:

  1. Make “Mesh” the root of the CameraBoom;
  2. Set Location props to X:7 — Y:12 — Z:0;
  3. Change Parent Socket value to head;
  4. Set Target Arm Length to 0.0;
