Fresher/Mid-level/Senior resume with some premiumness

Will highlight nuances of each category below but most of the things remain the same.

  1. Non-technical: This will contain everything that is not related to your skills directly.
  2. Technical: Highlighting your technical skills.

Non-technical

  1. Don’t make your resume too vibrant. Plain, white and black resumes are preferred by premium companies.
  2. Try to fit all your resume content in one page. Premium company recruiters might get 100’s of resumes everyday and they might not have time to go through multiple pages.
  3. Mention your personal details like name, email, contact details at top of the resume. Some keep it in the bottom and recruiters sometimes will not have patience to check it out.

Technical

  1. Premium companies expect some premiumness in your resume. It could be a other premium companies that you worked in the past or a premium college etc. If you have any such premiumness, highlight it. (Highlighted on the left side in the resume below — Figure 1.)
  2. Highlight all the coding competitions or any other competition that you participated with your ranking. If you have not participated in any, at least participate now and get some ranking. This shows the candidate loves competitiveness. (Highlighted on the left side below resume Figure 1.)
  3. Mention all the premium companies that you worked for one by one in the keeping most recent on top. Don’t explain everything that you’re working in that company, try to keep it between 2–3 lines. (Highlighted on the right side below resume Figure 1.)
  4. The Last section will be your project, mention important projects that you worked on and explain it in 2–3 points.
  5. In case of your fresher/Junior you can stick to the above template and highlight your internship experience. Sample resume in figure 2.

There are many who don’t have any premiumness in their resume, ex: they are not from a premium college or premium company etc. In such scenarios I will explain, how you can get shortlisted in a premium companies.

  1. At least in India all Engineering/BCA/MCA colleges work under big universities. If you’re from Tier 2/Tier 3 college then rather mentioning your college name, mention your university name in your resume.
  2. Try to compete in some online coding/any other relevant competition and get a good rank and highlight it on your resume.
  3. If you’re experienced but you’re working for a service company then highlight the impact that you’re doing from the project.

Ex:

  • My application handles 1M requests every minute.
  • My application has brought nearly 2M+ sales to the company.
  • The healthcare device that I worked on saved more than 10000 lives last year etc.

4. Actively contribute to open source. Pick those open source libraries that are popular in the field that you’re applying to.

With above 4 points without a premium company or college you can increase your odds of getting your resume selected in a premium company.
