Yoko Ono’s “Instruction Paintings,” created in the 1960s, were ahead of their time in terms of their engagement with concepts that are now at the forefront of contemporary art and technology. My opinion is, her works anticipated the use of AI-generated image prompt engineering, NFTs, and other contemporary art practices without realizing. Yoko Ono’s instruction paintings were the first ever prompts for AI image generation. She also toyed with ideas such as keeping only a digital copy of an artwork and destroying the original. She basically defined how to create an NFT 50 years before the NFT term and technology was invented.
