It seems like bootcamps have been a popular way to break into tech the last few years. Bootcamps were primarily created to provide people a way to transition their careers into a web development career path without having to spend years at school and spending thousands of dollars.

Bootcamps for web development work well for many. I know a handful of successful software engineers that started out with bootcamps and swear by them.

Bootcamps started to work so well that they started to pop up everywhere and started to offer more than just web development.

Eventually we started to see bootcamps offer data science tracks. Data science isn’t a topic that can be offered in a bootcamp. It may work for a few people, but this isn’t a good idea for the majority.

Why bootcamp?

Before we dive into why bootcamps aren’t an effective way to become a data scientist, I first want to look at why they might seem like a good idea.
