Hazbin Hotel is Sinfully Good

A short review of the Hazbin Hotel pilot.

Hazbin Hotel is an adult musical dramedy by Vivienne “Viziepop” Medrano, featuring the voices of Jill Harris, Monica Franco, Michael Kovach and presented by Spindle Horse Toons. The pilot for Hazbin Hotel was released on the 28th, and I finally had a chance to take a look. While the pilot was short, it had a lot of really great elements.

Plot

Not surprisingly, hell is having an over-population issue. The solution? Genocide, of course. Now, where souls go when they die, or if they’re just destroyed, is anyone’s guess, but Charlie, the princess of hell, has had enough. And so she decides to open a hotel with the goal of rehabilitating souls and sending them to heaven. How does the rest of the citizens of hell respond to the idea? About as well as can be expected.

Style

Hazbin Hotel has a very quirky style. It’s vibrant and bizarre. It’s definitely an adult animation and has plenty of content that isn’t appropriate for younger audiences. And the adult humor works exceptionally well, considering the setting. I admittedly don’t know my visual styles as well as I would like to, but the general attire and visual style are in many ways reminiscent of the Gatsby era, with pinstripe suits, and the occasional black and white…
