lives unlived
make the heart weep

where you went wrong
what remained undone

the numinous moment
of choice when
you failed to choose

interrupted destinies
dissolved dreams
meetings unmet
memories never made
birds that didn’t fly

delivering you to
the present present

lamenting the unknown
what might have been

except for a moment
of hesitation

when courage failed
and a future died

imagined ruins
beyond resurrection

time’s second hands
continue their sweep

unlived lives
make the heart weep
