Hero

As a kid I dreamed I’d be
a super-powered anything;
not so much a will for power
as it was a way for love.

The hero never got the girl,
but he loved her from afar.

Now that I am old I know
it was not about the girl.
It was bigger, so much simpler.
I gave up that cape long ago,
feats of strength beyond me now.
But for today if I can just
show up to hold your hand and cry
with you, that will be enough.

The hero never got the girl,
but he did save the world.
