Not All That Glitters

Fool’s Gold.

A rose is a rose is a rose… mostly.

Arguments become cleverly stupid,
denying the palpable presence
of a world that knows its own names.
You may call a cassowary a cat, but
crafty words will not make it purr.
How to discern illusion from delusion?
The pockets of the poor remain empty
no matter how filled with explanations.
Lovers flit madly across the earth
even as wiser folk laugh at love.
Polemics do not diminish hurricanes.
Tormented analyses overflow our days.
Perhaps the voice of a quacking duck
should simply be admitted as fowl,
the weeping of refugees called tears.
Many nimble words seek to sway.
Pundits provide diets of incoherence.
Politicians babble absurd reasons.
Presidents tweet solipsistic howlers.
Strike a winning blow for reality.
Let not the mind’s fabric fray.
Hold tight the solidity of the day.
