You started out somewhere and ended up here,
scribbling hard at a blank, resilient page.
This is called The Mystery of Life.
You weren’t paying very much attention,
just rambling around doing this and that.
You really thought you were nowhere at all.
For decades, you wandered in that numbness.
You never consulted maps or made to-do lists.
It was dark and you were unsure of any destination.
You were caught up in the essential banality of things.
You thought that inspecting the void was your job.
You performed perfectly, making sure of no leaks.
The pen appearing in your hand was a surprise.
It astonished you by beginning to scrawl.
That wasn’t what you expected at all.
And now you sit, imagine, scratch and write,
wondering rather than wandering in the night.

Therapy doesn’t come cheap.
