Andy often hung out at the athletic fields in the neighborhood park. He never joined in the games but rather just watched. He was a spectator and he was not alone in that. Other kids also were there just to watch and it was with these kids that Andy sought companionship.

One day while watching a girl’s softball game Andy fell in love with the second baseman on one of the teams. He could not keep his eyes off of her. She moved with a natural grace like a Major League baseball all-star. Unlike many of the other girls, she threw with pinpoint accuracy, gloved every ball that came her way, ran with blazing speed, and batted with power to all parts of the field. What excited Andy most was her long auburn ponytail that protruded from the hole in the back of her baseball cap and flung wildly in all directions as she moved.

Though madly in love, Andy felt that he could not approach her. After all, she was a player and he was merely a spectator. The situation seemed hopeless and prompted him to make a life-changing decision. He would no longer be just a spectator. He would practice and practice and practice until he became a worthwhile athlete — and not just worthwhile but good. He wanted to be out on the field and have her spot him and fall in love with him.
