What Happened to the Light?
Aug 8, 2017 · 1 min read
What happens to the light
as it bares down on
bare foot hills, heat drenched
and brown, now subdued?
Oaks that shade static grass
themselves show in diffusion.
Across the valley fire
rages against homes,
gathers itself to spread,
sucks oxygen to smother,
takes heat-lit curses and
blows them across sky.
Look, a barn stands defiant.
A hundred miles away
it needs no flame to fall,
just the exhaled breath of
minutes, hours, days against
our pantomime of meaning.
Yet it stands.
What happened to the light?
It darkened barely enough
to perceive but not
to comprehend.
