Get to know about PM roles according to their work profiles & skill sets. Few of them, especially the newbies still amazed and curious to know what type of PM roles actually exist in the industry. Am I correct? Oh, yes. So, let’s keep on reading this article based on the product management world.

I hope you are aware of what Product Management really is. If not, then here is an article for you to get more about Product Management.

Let’s come to the point, basically, the product manager type depends upon

  1. Work Type- What type of work you are doing?
  2. Industry Type- For which industry & target audience you are working?

Let me take the first one i.e. Work Type. Work type PM’s are being categorized based on their skills i.e. what skills you have and you are supposed to do work with those skill sets. Let’s categorise the work type PM.

A. Technical Product Manager (Back-end)- Who knows technical in-outs, coding language & probably the techie before jumping into PM role. But these guys probably end up working like Engineering manager rather than a PM.

B. Designer Product Manager (Front-end)- Who has a good sense of UI/UX & cares about hassle-free user experience in design. But these guys probably very less towards the technical side.

C. Business Product Manager- Who has a good awareness of business process & can think critically from the leadership point of view. But probably they don’t have a good understanding of a technical & design point of view.

D. Data Product Manager- Who are good in analytical skills and can track the data for the product, business & sales of the company. But they may lack the big picture of productivity.

E. Growth Product Manager- Who is focussed on growth & engagement of the product. but they may lack doing the experimentation with their product & see the results.

Now, come to the Industry Type. It means the industry in which you are working & the target audience for which you re working decides the type of PM you are. Let’s categorize the industry type PM.

A. Internal Product Manager- Who solves the problem of the users who are internal to your organization. They manage internal products which the organization doesn’t sell to others, instead of that they use those products in organization support & other business activities. For eg: A PM to manage a product used by the company itself.

B. Business to Consumer (B2C) Product Manager (Consumer PM)- Who solves the problem of the users who are external to your organization and are the actual customers of your product/company. For eg: Managing & launching a product for the end-users like Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Soundcloud, etc.

C. Business to Business (B2B) Product Manager (SAAS PM)- Who solves the problem of the users who are Clients for your organization and they will use the product directly. For eg: Oracle, Salesforce build their software and sell to other companies.

So, these all are the types of product managers what I have told you to exist in the industry. So, which type of Product Manager you are? You have to decide on your type. Ideally, having an only single type of skillset won’t work in this role, like if you think that I’m good in front-end then I’m a Designer PM, that’s it. Oh really? No Boss! We are Product Managers and we sit on the top of the funnel of a company, to drive it, manage it. It’s our core responsibility to get the work done seamlessly without having any roadblocks.

Product Managers are the managers having tons of workload with little power.

In the next post, I will tell you what are the Metrics & tools to track the metrics and the procedure to track them.
