Open Letter to the New York Times

Protesting Elinor Burkett’s “What Makes a Woman?”

To whom it may concern:

The transgender women undersigned, along with our allies in the following section, write this letter to express our extreme disappointment and anger over the publication of Elinor Burkett’s “What Makes a Woman?” in which the Times continued its pattern of permitting cisgender women to comment on Caitlyn Jenner’s transition without devoting equivalent space to the perspectives of trans women. However, Burkett’s piece crosses an unacceptable moral and ethical line by questioning not just our actions, but our basic existence.

Burkett writes, “People who haven’t lived their whole lives as women, whether Ms. Jenner or Mr. Summers, shouldn’t get to define us.” To this we offer this simple rejoinder: “People who are not transgender women shouldn’t get to define us.” Jenner expressed her personal truth in describing her experience, while Burkett devotes an entire article that actively defines transgender women, not just Jenner, seemingly without having spoken to any of us.

More importantly, Burkett performs this definition by actively continuing to define us as men. Behind the polite veneer of “a cruelly marginalized group’s battle for justice is something we instinctively want to rally behind” lies a hateful need to refuse our womanhood. Amid the grudging concession of using “she” twice is the repeated use of Jenner’s old name and gender markers while emphasizing that she was “a man” when she performed such actions, even in describing moments when Jenner was expressing the deepest truths of her womanhood. Phrases such as “people like Ms. Jenner” rather than “woman,” or “the right of men to throw off the mantle of maleness” rather than “the right of women to throw off the maleness thrust upon them,” reveals Burkett’s continued and offensive denial of our identities.

Burkett also reveals her immense cisgender privilege in presuming that we can only be full-fledged women according to her and cisgender women’s strictures, a condition that other cisgender women are not subjected to. This does not even account for the fact that Jenner advances only one, media-driven model of femininity, a type that practically all female celebrities adhere to. Among trans women as among cisgender women are an incredible range of presentations that Burkett deems monolithic for her own convenience, and because she feels that it is her and other cisgender women’s privilege to judge our presentations and only deem us women according to their highly prejudiced standards.

Just because we haven’t presented as women all our lives does not mean that we don’t have as much right to define our womanhood as anyone else, nor does it mean that other women have the right to define the fundamental matter of our gender for us. The argument that trans women are inherently socialized differently than other women ignores the vast differences between the ways that individual women are socialized, and does not only privilege cisgender women but also the American-born, heterosexual, affluent, white women that often becomes the default metric of womanhood. We join other minority women, especially because many of us are intersectional and belong to other minority groups, in asserting that any model that attempts to unify all women’s experiences automatically imposes one dominant model of that experience over others. This devalues the experiences of all women but especially of minorities.

The New York Times showed unacceptable prejudice and privilege in allowing the deepest recesses of our personal truths to be the subject of debate, as though we must pass a test run by cisgender women to be allowed to exist as women. We’re done with tests. Like the oppressed minorities that have come before us, a fundamental part of our dignity is the ability to exist as human beings without condition. Given that gender is an embedded part of humanity, we demand that The New York Times publicly apologize for questioning our right to exist, and to pledge never to do so again in its pages.
