The Day I Say Goodbye

The prospect of transitioning is hard to contemplate. But it is becoming even harder to deny the truth within me.

In a recent Tumblr visit, I ran across a post by a woman I had not seen before. As with most social media sites, other blogs get recommended or inserted into your timeline. Often they are just more of the same. But this one was different. Instead of a picture of another model or photograph of a seaside village or picturesque cobblestone street, it was a story. Nothing unusual for Medium, but scarcely seen on Tumblr.

The article was by an author named “mindovermaddie" — clever — and the article was entitled “The End.” It is a really good read and you can find it here.

Most transition stories or YouTube videos are told from the point of view of the person who has transitioned. And whether or not you feel that is the same person they transitioned from, this story was written from Matt’s perspective, the guy that went away, rather than from Maddie’s.

And like other recent experiences in my life, this inversion of the transition story has shaken me up and has me looking at things through a new pair of spectacles. It reminds me a bit of a story about goal setting in Victor Frankl’s book Man’s Search for Meaning. Most people evaluate where they are…
