Parents of trans kids have heard all the things. Every accusation, every assumption, every argument against us, every comment presumed to be clever and original — we’ve heard them all. Others’ disapproval of the way we love our kids unconditionally will always be around, but really, why are some people so very vocal in their denial of another person’s life, a life lived that, in no way, affects their own?

The Shakespearian line comes to mind: “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.” In other words, someone who denies something vehemently is often hiding an inconvenient truth.

If you happen to be the parent of a trans kid and you’re more public in your advocacy? You definitely hear all the things, and then some.

I’ve been writing openly for three years about my family’s journey — which isn’t over yet; it’s constantly changing and evolving, you know, the way life tends to do. I always try to make it clear: this journey is a work in progress.

And, just to preemptively answer the one question that’s on many folks’ minds: yes, me being public is okay with my kid.
