Why The Hell Are We Not Talking About Baton Rouge?
Open up your browser and type in CNN. Yes right now. Any coverage of the flood that has over 2,600 people in shelters, 40 state highways closed, and 60,646 houses damaged causing resident displacement?
I have to scroll so low that by the time I get down to the coverage I end up not even remembering what I was looking for in the first place. I get past the Donald Trump crap, a couple of Olympic pool stories, and then of what is shaping up to be one of the worst natural disasters in the nation at the very bottom.
15,000, yes, 15,000 homes and businesses underwater, but info on why the Olympic swimming pools turn green is supposed to interest me much more. Thank you America!
Is Louisiana too southern (meaning filled with black people) to be an important part of American history?
They’ve already faced enough this summer when we look at the fact that they’ve had a racially charged officer involved shooting, the murder of three police officers, and now a flood.
Maybe because it didn’t have a name to the storm? Or maybe National Media has so much going on we can’t decide what’s important anymore.
The medias ignorance to this event is an example of Rob Nixons slow violence. He says that “ Our media bias toward spectacular violence exacerbates the vulnerability of ecosystems treated as disposable.”
The national media has faced a lot of criticism for the lack of attention it has shown to this unfortunate event. There has been some coverage of the event, but it has not dominated media like Hurricane Katrina or the massive earthquakes we’ve seen recently. It definitely doesn’t have as much media coverage as it did when there were protests over the death of Alton Sterling and an ambush killing of three officers.
For the national media to not recognize the gravity of this this tragedy and talk about the issues it will bring out for the national economy is pretty sad. Louisiana is the energy capital of the world, and slowly but surely the state is going to need government assistance in a couple months. Talking and giving attention to the situation at hand could help the federal government become much more effective in the long run, but weighting it out is what will create a larger impact on the people. What happens when you procrastinate until the last minute to get an assignment done? Stress, stress, and more stress. Thanks again America.
What I think about this is that Baton Rouge does not give enough sensational visibility. With disasters like Katrina or earthquakes you can see doors flying off the hinges, rooftops being damaged, and things flying around, but people kayaking to avoid drowning in their houses doesn’t make a spectacle. There’s no “good stuff” in the flood. No racism issues, terrorism, you know something to bring interest to the channel.
I found it hard to believe at one point, but the media is ALL ABOUT MONEY. All about views, and do people really want to sit around and watch people kayak and make boats to find shelter? Imagine a flood on the news for about an hour, people would get bored and the news channels would lose ratings.
People in Louisiana are coming together and helping one another more than the government could ever do. Neighbors are helping neighbors survive and it is amazing how loving and helpful the people of Louisiana have been to one another. Get it together National Media, for once let’s not make it about money or ratings, nevertheless, we do live in America.
