MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Nationally ranked startup accelerator, gener8tor, has opened applications for its fall gBETA Medtech cohort focused on supporting Black founders in the healthcare industry. The program, made possible with financial support from Boston Scientific, will, for the first time, offer a $10,000 grant to each of the companies selected for the cohort, while also focusing on mentor connections.

gBETA Medtech is a free, seven-week accelerator that works with medical device, healthcare-related software, biotech and diagnostics startups for no fees and no equity. Each gBETA program is capped at five companies to ensure meaningful engagement with sponsors and other resources. Participants receive intensive, individualized coaching and access to gener8tor’s national network of mentors, customers, corporate partners and investors. The program is designed to help startups gain early customer traction on their product or idea and establish metrics that can make them competitive applicants for full-time, equity-based accelerators or seed investment.

More than 150 startups applied to participate in the gBETA Medtech Spring 2021 cohort, making it one of the most competitive gBETA programs that gener8tor offers.

gBETA Medtech works exclusively with startups focused on healthcare. This includes healthcare devices, software, biological technology and healthcare services for diagnosing, treating and/or monitoring diseases or medical conditions, as well as technology or process innovations that serve any component of the supply chain.

This fall’s gBETA Medtech Black Founder Accelerator will work with companies that meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • one or more individuals with the title of “Founder,” “Co-Founder” or “CEO” identifies as Black or African American
  • at least 20% of the equity ownership is held by one or more individuals who identify as Black or African American and such individuals have a significant role in the decision-making process

“Since the original gBETA Medtech cohort, this program has helped Boston Scientific support early-stage ventures in new ways,” said Randy Schiestl, Vice President, Research & Development at Boston Scientific, the initial funder of the program. “To build on these efforts while advancing our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion exemplifies the spirit of meaningful collaboration that makes truly transformational innovation possible.”

The program will run from October 18 to December 10, 2021. Applications are open through August 31, 2021. To learn more and apply, visit gbetamedtech.com.
